A valid EU, EEA/EFTA or Swiss licence is recognised in Poland for its validity period. The ordinary six-month rule concerns relevant non-EU licences, not this group.

Transport, driving & vehicles
Understand whether you can drive in Poland, when you need to exchange or obtain a licence, how to buy or register a vehicle, check compulsory insurance and inspection, and what to do after a road incident.
DryRights does not make people learn transport law before they can drive or use a vehicle safely. DryRights explains what to check and what to do next.
Emergency first
Is anyone injured or in immediate danger?
Call 112 or 999. Prioritise scene safety and first aid; insurance and paperwork come afterwards.
Open emergency accident guidanceStart with your situation
What do you want to do or what has happened?
Drive, exchange or obtain a licence, buy or register a vehicle, check OC or inspection, deal with an incident, or sell a vehicle.
What do you need now?
Which driving-licence route applies?
EU/EEA/Swiss licences, ordinary non-EU licences, and Ukrainian licences held under temporary protection are different legal routes. A Ukrainian nationality alone does not establish the temporary-protection route.

Important current updates
For relevant valid non-EU licences, driving in Poland is generally recognised for six months from the start of permanent or temporary residence, subject to conventions and special rules.
Official source: ELIA valid Ukrainian licence is recognised under a special EU rule if the person actually enjoys temporary or adequate national protection. This is different from the ordinary six-month rule.
Official source: EUR-LexOfficial source: EUR-LexThe EU temporary-protection framework is extended to 4 March 2028, subject to current eligibility conditions. For a licence, your actual protection status matters, not nationality alone.
Official source: EUR-LexFor a first Polish licence, obtain a PKK before training and exams. Passing an exam alone does not replace a valid document or an available temporary electronic entitlement.
Official source: Gov.plOfficial source: CEPiK / COIA private owner generally has 30 days after acquisition or import to apply for registration. Missing it can mean a 500 PLN penalty; vehicle traders have a separate 90-day/1,000 PLN rule.
Official source: Gov.plA seller or donor of a registered vehicle separately notifies disposal within 30 calendar days. Missing this may mean a 250 PLN penalty.
Official source: Gov.plCurrent standard registration components include 66.50 PLN for the certificate/legalisation set, 13.50 PLN for a temporary permit and 80 PLN for new standard car plates. The total depends on the case and plate retention.
Official source: Gov.plAfter purchase, the seller’s existing OC policy transfers by law, but it does not renew automatically for the next annual period. Act early to avoid a gap.
Official source: Rzecznik FinansowyFor a passenger car, 2026 UFG no-OC penalties are 1,920 PLN for 1–3 days, 4,810 PLN for 4–14 days and 9,610 PLN for over 14 days. These values apply only in 2026.
Official source: UFGFor a passenger vehicle registered outside the EEA, UFG lists a 2026 9,610 PLN fee for no recognised OC. Foreign-vehicle insurance is checked separately from a Polish case.
Official source: UFGSince 19 September 2025, a periodic passenger-car technical inspection costs 149 PLN under the current fee table.
Official source: Ministry of InfrastructureOfficial source: Dziennik UstawIf someone is injured or there is an immediate threat to life or health, secure the scene, give first aid and call 112 or 999 first. A damage-only collision is different.
Official source: Gov.plOfficial source: PolicjaOfficial source: Ministry of HealthAccording to Gov.pl’s 23 July 2026 update, after one year of holding a licence more than 24 points lead to a qualification-check exam and psychological assessment; in the first year, more than 20 points withdraw all entitlements.
Official source: Gov.plA private used-car purchase may attract 2% PCC where it applies. Seller status, VAT and exemptions matter, so use Money & Taxes for the detailed check.
Official source: podatki.gov.plFor an intra-EU acquisition of an unregistered passenger car, submit the simplified excise declaration within 14 days of the tax event and no later than registration. Use Money & Taxes for calculation.
