Understand this route
The Council extended temporary protection to 4 March 2028. The Italian permit and its accompanying measures are, as of today, still tied to 4 March 2027. A new EU condition from 31 July 2026 on Ukrainian military-service obligations applies only to new applicants, not to people already protected on 30 July 2026.
What to check
- The expiry date printed on your permit: that, not the EU date, is what governs your stay.
- Whether your questura or the Interior Ministry has published renewal instructions beyond 4 March 2027.
- If you are applying for the first time after 31 July 2026: whether proof of military-service registration is required.
- Before leaving Italy for long, ask your questura whether your status survives it.
Caveat
Two different dates. At EU level temporary protection runs to 4 March 2028 (Council Decision (EU) 2026/1912). Italian instruments, as at 26 September 2026, are still tied to 4 March 2027, and we found no Italian implementing act for 2028. Check your questura and the Ministry of the Interior before acting.
