Understand this route
While you hold temporary protection, A2 is required for nothing. It becomes relevant at the move to the EU long-term residence permit. The cheapest route: a CPIA completion certificate showing A2 exempts you from the prefettura test under art. 4 of the Interministerial Decree of 4 June 2010. The MAECI-recognised certificates are CILS, CELI, PLIDA and Cert.it.
What to check
- Whether you need A2 now: not while on temporary protection.
- How to prove it: a CPIA certificate, a CILS, CELI, PLIDA or Cert.it certificate, or the prefettura test.
- Not AIL: MAECI does not recognise it.
Important
- AIL (Accademia Italiana di Lingua) is not among the MAECI-recognised certifying bodies — do not rely on its certificate for the permit
Caveat
Two different dates. At EU level temporary protection runs to 4 March 2028 (Council Decision (EU) 2026/1912). Italian instruments, as at 26 September 2026, are still tied to 4 March 2027, and we found no Italian implementing act for 2028. Check your questura and the Ministry of the Interior before acting.
