Co-payments and exemptions

The SSN is not free across the board: specialist visits and tests carry a co-payment. Exemptions exist by income, age, pregnancy and chronic conditions, each with its own code. Codes and thresholds are set regionally, so the same situation can cost differently in Lombardy and Campania.

SSN registration: parity with citizens, and the date that limits it

Temporary protection gives compulsory registration with the National Health Service on the same terms as Italian citizens. Parity is extended to 31 December 2026 by Law 26/2026 art. 5(10-sexies). What happens after that date is not settled; watch for a further extension.

Urgent care: 112, emergency room, out-of-hours doctor

112 is the single number for everything; 118 and the others still work and reach the same centre. Emergency rooms admit regardless of status or papers. At night and at weekends ordinary problems go to the out-of-hours service, not to an ambulance.
